HATFIELD — Hatfield is receiving an additional $1.5 million from a state MassWorks grant to cover ongoing expenses associated with a project to upgrade and extend water and sewer infrastructure on Route 5.

Town officials recently announced that the Executive Office of Housing and Community Development is increasing the grant from its original $2 million commitment. The town previously supplemented the grant with $1.6 million in borrowing approved by voters.

At their meeting on Nov. 9, Select Board members credited Sen. Jo Comerford, D-Northampton, with assistance from Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa, D-Northampton, for securing the new funding.

“It is an absolutely huge feat that she accomplished and we really thank her for that,” Chairwoman Diana Szynal said.

Szynal said the project, underway for two years and the source of complaints from residents due to construction noise and debris, has been slowed by unforeseen circumstances, including a high water table and poor soils.

“We ran into significant unexpected costs out there,” Szynal said.

Select Board member Brian Moriarty thanked both Town Administrator Marlene Michonski and Highway Director Phil Genovese for their oversight, while board member Ed Jaworski said it’s been a team effort that included conversations among town officials and representatives with MassWorks Program Assistant Juan Vega and Undersecretary Ashley Stolba.

“A lot of hard work on everyone’s part,” Jaworski said.
